Taxpayers will have to decide if they are getting their money’s worth. Every spring taxpayers find out what public servants and our local elected officials earn.
The Ontario Ministry of Finance last week released figures for public employees who earned more than $100,000 in hospitals, school boards and colleges and universities. The number of Ontario public servant employees who made $100,000 or more has risen to 42,527 in 2007 from 27,459 in 2005.
Greater Sudbury’s chief financial officer, Lorella Hayes, released her report entitled: Remuneration and Expenses Paid to Members of Council and Council appointees During 2007 last week.
Ward 8 Councillor Ted Callaghan was the most thrifty local policician. He claimed $3,421.02 and not a penny for mileage. Most councillors claimed more than $10,000 on their expense/mileage forms.
Taxpayers may be interested to know Mayor Rodriguez made $100,037.20 with $7,300.79 in fringe benefits.
Fringe benefits include Canada Pension Plan, Employer Health Tax, dental, life insurance, long-term disability and parking benefits amongst other items.
Councillors made between $29,920.80 and $36,796 depending on what boards and committees they sat on. Fringe benefits for councillors range from $4,035.11 to $8,652.93.
Expenses claimed can vary depending on what out-of-town travel was involved for attendance at municipal association or provincial or federal meetings.
Some councillors such as Joe Cimino said he spent money on communicating to his ward through flyers delivered by ward youth, as communication was a concern he heard during the election.
Mileage claimed was often higher for councillors in outlying areas.
