Council decides to rename Paris Street Bridge; Structure now known as Bridge of Nations

The Paris Street bridge has been given a new moniker in recognition of the 72 flags that fly from the structure.
City council agreed to name it "Bridge of Nations Pont Des Nations" during its meeting Wednesday night.
Before renaming the bridge, council thanked the three members of the Paris Street Flag Committee -Ursula Sauve, Dan Lee and Colin Firth. "The flags reflect the various nations from which we sprang. You have united us on this bridge," said Mayor John Rodriguez to the three volunteers, before presenting them with certificates.
The flag project, which was unveiled on Canada Day, was a vision of Sauve, an Australian immigrant.
She had a vision of a bridge with colour, flying the flags of all the countries from which Sudbury residents originated. Sauve, Lee and Firth put in countless hours to get the project off the ground. In total, 72 flagpoles were erected and all but two carry a different flag. The tally is 64 sovereign countries, four nations, a city flag, a provincial flag and two Canadian flags.
The city has sent information to officials with the Guinness Book of World Records in hopes of obtaining a world record.
Sauve told council she has heard a lot of great feedback about the bridge.
"I think everybody in the city seems to enjoy it," she said.
The bridge makes a statement about Sudbury, saying it is welcoming and embraces people from all cultures and nations, she said.
"I think it puts colour on the bridge," she added. "Hopefully, it will be the beginning of some other things downtown."
