Roads not improving; Star poll finds majority believe city's streets are as bad as they were last year
Local News - Monday, August 27, 2007 @ 09:00
Greater Sudbury's roads are in no better shape now than they were a year ago, say the majority of people who participated in The Star's weekly Internet poll question.
More than 575 people voted online and 80 per cent of them agreed the city's roads are not in any better shape than they were in 2006.
Sixteen per cent of voters thought road construction has made a difference, while four per cent of people were not sure.
Callers to The Star's hotline mirrored the online response.
"They are devastating and a lot of work has to be done," said one caller.
"They are the worst roads. I would sooner walk on a cow path on Manitoulin Island than drive on the streets of Sudbury."
Callers counted Main Street in Val Caron and Paris Street in the downtown core as some of the worst roads in Greater Sudbury.
Road repair was identified as a priority for the city, but one woman said she hasn't seen any sign of work.
"When are they starting?"
Another man said the residential streets are in "terrible shape" and are being ignored.
"The only thing being done is patching and conditioning on the main roads ... I'm ashamed of this city."
Another person made a similar observation.
"If they stop patching and actually lay down real asphalt, they'd be further on in the game," said a male caller.

Do you think roads in Greater Sudbury are in better shape than last year?; Asked Saturday at Market Square
Local News - Monday, August 27, 2007 @ 09:00
Mark Riley
"I've travelled all over Ontario and Sudbury seems to be the only city where we keep digging up the same roads."
Lee Mayer
"I've lived on Gladu Road for 25 years and this year they have finally repaired it. They put in culverts and made it wider."
Rod Bonhomme
"They seem to be tearing up the same spot over and over again. They don't seem to be doing it properly."
Bill Krupka
"Are you kidding? You need to revamp the roads that come into Sudbury. Highway 144 is treacherous and I see they're working on Highway 69."
Eve Krupka
"No, but they're getting better."
Lionel Gionet
"Some of them are improving, but others are just getting worse."

I was the only mayoral candidate to offer an annual road resurfacing program.
Road Resurfacing Program In 2006, resurfacing roads costs 12 $ a square meter. Milling, grading, repaving and line striping one kilometer of 4 lane roadway costs approximately 250,000 $.
There is 3521 lane kilometers of roadway in Sudbury. Not all are in need of resurfacing and not all are 4 lane roadways, some are only 2 or 5 and 6 lanes wide when turning lanes are included. We will begin an annual resurfacing program and do as many kilometers per year at a current annual cost of 25 million $. A pavement warranty by the contractor will be put in place. Those who build or resuface our roads will now be required to also maintain them for the life of the pavement warranty period. A contractual guarantee that the road will function appropriately for 15 to 20 years, and if it does not, the contractor must replace or repair it at no cost to the city. This will provide incentive to the contractor to build it in the highest quality fashion so it will last the life of their guarantee.
